While many celebrate Valentine’s Day with romantic gestures, some spend the day alone.
But in Lansing, the Divine Living Center is making sure no one is forgotten by asking their community to send Valentine's cards or gifts to their residents.
“Many of them have spent their lives caring for others, and now it's our turn to provide them with engaging, joyful, and fulfilling experiences. I want them to feel a sense of purpose, connection, and excitement every day, whether through social events, creative activities, or simple moments of companionship,” says Facility Manager Liza Hobbins.

She posted photos in a Facebook group of residents holding up signs with their names and the facility’s address, along with the caption:
“Valentine's Day is coming up, our residents would love to be your Valentine. Feel free to mail or drop off Valentine's cards at the facility. We will make sure they get delivered. We are looking forward to reading your cards!”

They plan to kick off the festivities at lunch by serving heart-shaped pizzas donated by a pizza store. Then they’ll spend the entire afternoon reading all of the cards sent to them.
To top the night off, they’ll crown a King and Queen that’s voted by the staff.

“Seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter, and watching them actively participate is incredibly rewarding. Many residents expressed gratitude for the effort we put into making their day special, and some even shared that these activities give them something to look forward to. It fosters a sense of community and keeps their spirits high,” she says.
Hobbins's deep passion for enhancing residents' quality of life has driven her throughout her six years of work at the assisted living facility.

She continues, “I also draw inspiration from my team, family members, and even the residents themselves, who often share wonderful stories and ideas. Seeing the impact of our work firsthand is the greatest motivation. . .I am fortunate to work with a dedicated team and supportive leadership that values resident-centered care. Management provides the resources needed to implement engaging programs, while my team collaborates to bring creativity and enthusiasm to every event. We work together to ensure that every resident feels valued, included, and cared for, making our facility a true home for them.”
